BIOGRAPHY

Benjamin O. Anderson, MD is a Professor of Surgery and Global Health-Medicine at the University of Washington School of Medicine in Seattle, Joint Member in Public Health Sciences at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center (FHCRC) and Director of the Breast Health Clinic at the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance (SCCA). Dr Anderson trained in surgical oncology as an American Cancer Society Clinical Oncology Fellow at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York. Dr Anderson serves as Chair and Director of the Breast Health Global Initiative (BHGI) to address breast healthcare guideline development and implementation in low- and middle-income countries.

MOTIVATION FOR JOINING THE UICC BOARD OF DIRECTORS

As the UICC representative for the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center since 2003, I understand that UICC is the single most important non-governmental international cancer organisation around the globe. UICC speaks to the world about cancer to highlight the needs of low- and middle-income countries (LMCs). As a member of the UICC Board of Directors, I will focus on three areas for global cancer care: EDUCATION: Improved cancer outcomes require that the public understands the importance of cancer prevention and early detection and that these awareness efforts be linked to functional healthcare delivery systems. UICC provides exceptional training experiences through the international cancer fellowships to train physicians and scientists in LMCs. I pledge to support UICC in its global cancer awareness and education efforts. SCIENTIFIC GUIDANCE: Resource-appropriate guidelines are needed to address cancer early detection, diagnosis and treatment in LMCs. My experience in the Breast Health Global Initiative (BHGI) provides a relevant framework for working with others to design realistic systems that can be implemented in the settings of limited resources. I promise to assist UICC in developing scientificallyrealistic healthcare approaches for LMCs to address cancer. ORGANISATIONAL COLLABORATION: Collaboration of international cancer organisations and other NGOs is of critical importance, particularly today when the UN and WHO have identified the management of non-communicable diseases as a toppriority. I offer my experience on national and international boards and organisations as a basis for working with other individuals and groups to improve global cancer outcomes around the world.

MOTIVATION FOR JOINING THE UICC BOARD OF DIRECTORS

I believe I could support UICC in its efforts towards the global health commitment through my personal and professional experiences. Being a breast cancer survivor, a physician and an advocate from a region where breast cancer is a burden gives me an understanding of the culture and the psychosocial barriers people encounter when fighting cancer in a region where challenges are numerous. I believe in UICCs approach: Together we are stronger.I have worked with the US-Middle East Partnership Programme and with the Breast Health Global Initiative. I am an activist who advocates throughout the Middle East for a better tomorrow for my daughter and every daughter in the world.I think I could make a difference working in UICC advocacy for early detection and screening for breast cancer and to empower women in the region in their health rights particularly breast cancer patients’ rights. Through my work in the media as a writer for the local newspaper and my TV programme I could help in advocating for UICC objectives in uniting global efforts and improving women’s health and quality of life.
